We've made some big changes to the AOL.com homepage recently that represent the start of an evolution of the home page design. In the coming weeks, we will be introducing new features and making changes to address the feedback that we've received from you, our users, since we rolled out the beta test of our new home page back in April.
We are also happy to introduce AOL Homepage Blog as a forum to help us keep you updated on what's new and what's coming soon, and to let you tell us what you think. More importantly, unlike a survey or a "feedback form," this blog helps us establish an ongoing conversation with you. You provide us feedback and we look to respond. Having this dialogue with you is a critical element to help us build the best possible products, and we recognize that not having had one until now was a missed opportunity that we are excited to address.
So the obvious question, why are we changing AOL.com now?
The new AOL.com represents the first major change to the home page design since 2005, when we first began transitioning of all of our products from the traditional AOL "walled garden" to the open Web (Basically, when we stopped charging for subscriptions and made our content free to everyone). Admittedly, the current AOL.com design has some flaws. It represents some outdated design standards, features and thinking. We've learned a lot over the last two years and we're putting that knowledge to use to make our product better.
One of the most important things we've learned over the years is that you have choices. You make the choice to visit AOL.com and we need to work hard to keep you here. And we've spent the last year working to design a new version of AOL.com that's faster, easier to use, more relevant and more customizable to make your online experience better. We hope you think the new AOL.com hits the mark. But if you don't, that's OK too. Please let us know by using this blog. Let us know what you like, what you don't like and what you think we're missing. While we may not be able to respond to every request, we will be reading all of your feedback. And hopefully, we will shed some light on our thought process, and why we do the things we do. All we ask is that you keep your comments constructive and focused on the homepage.
So we're just getting started! We hope that you will check in with us often. We'll be here ...
Cheers,
Lisa
AOL.com Product Lead
P.S. I keep using the word "we" because running AOL.com isn't a one-person operation. There's a small team of talented and passionate people who support the home page. And I'll be introducing you to the team (my friends and colleagues) that works behind the scenes in the coming weeks.

I don't consider it to be 'customizing' when I have to pick through content that AOL has already chosen. Whooopee I get to change the colour of my page. We aren't idiots! I want a true customizable homepage where the only content on it is what I...and I alone...choose. And not from AOL's offerings....but from the World Wide Web. Sorry but once again....AOL fails.

Can you make the email system any worse? Why not hire some folks that have spent the last few years in caves to help you. Absolutely pitiful. You had a product that worked and you ruined it. I'll move to the cable email - it can't be any worse.

Your home page does not fully load (www.aol.com). I can't select the AIM link. There is no color selector. There is no page width selector. Your graphics fall off the left side of my window and I can't scroll over to them. And finally I can no longer use iChat which for god knows what reason goes through your servers which I assume you have also screwed up. If I were more forgiving I'd give you a D-.

I downloaded, upgraded, changed, and resposded to all questions asked about media player 10, and you know what, I still find that the aol movies will still not play. When I try to find out what it means to authorize my computer, same results, NONE. When I try to question customer service, same result NONE. It this is all the response I get, well you can keep your media player, aol, and the rest of this garbage. I'll just delete all this and go back to my old player. All I wanted was to watch some old tv, but if it takes 7 hours just to get the same results forget it. What does it take to get aol to authoize my computer?

OK, I am now annoyed. I have had AOL for 10+ years. I want to get rid of the ads in Spanish. I am not a spanish speaker and it is annoying. It is becoming a real pain.

I haven't been able to get into my email AT ALL since last Friday..........I don't even know if I want to try it today. If I can't get in, I'm cancelling my AOL account. You didn't help me at all with this new "improvement." I can't even get into "HELP" at AOL, so I can't get an answer from anyone.

The new format is a step backwards:
1. My address book is now alphabetized by FIRST names and not by last names. Very dumb and inconvenient.
2. When clicking a group address to include it in the address space of a forwarded e-mail, over half of the 14 addresses inexplicably have a three or four digit number added before the individual address making it an invalid address.
3. I used to be able to scroll down old mail, now it is a chore to bring up different pages to hunt an old e-mail.

Clearly this is not the place to complain about the email because NOTHING IS CHANGING! But I'm going to complain anyway. Not only is the email slow, boring and way to busy, the ridiculous graphics with "sticking tounge out," "tape", etc are so sophomoric I'm embarassed to use AOL at all. The only reason I do is because it is free.

Lisa: I want to use XDRIVE. It will not let me sign in. I have gone thru your process for upgrading the Screen Name... You now have seemingly cancelled my account thru this process. I have had XDRIVE for over 4 years. You give NO way to contact XDRIVE with any problems, just seemingly hyperboly about typiocal problems. So what has happened to mny information stored on XDRIVE that I pay for each month???
Would someone please contact me...
Regards
Mark
