The New Page Looks Exactly Like Yahoo!
We received more feedback on this topic than any other since we launched the Beta test. So we're glad to have an opportunity to address the issue, and to share the history and thought process that led us to the first Beta design. When we're done, you may still not agree with the approach, and that's OK. But most importantly, you will understand how we got here.
So how did we arrive at the new Beta design? We started designing the new AOL.com over a year ago. We spent months in the concept phase, conducting focus group and lab tests to create the next generation AOL.com homepage design. We looked at data, studied our competition and talked to users. We produced numerous home page concepts, at least three or four of which were radically different, both from a design and feature perspective, from other home pages (ours, Yahoo!, MSN etc.).
What we realized going through this exercise, however, was that there are a number of standards and "best practices" that have emerged in how good home pages are designed. Looking back at what we had done in previous home page designs and what Yahoo!, MSN and other leading sites had done over the last several years, it became clear that we had been borrowing good ideas from each other for many years. In fact, many of the elements of our new home page that might remind you of Yahoo!, like the "channel strip" with its colorful icons, are in fact elements that we have used successfully on our homepages for years.
That said, Yahoo! is a Web site that a vast number of people use on a regular basis, and they built a great site. Of course we've looked at what they've done and tried to learn from it to make our product better. In some ways you can look at the AOL.com Beta design that you see today as a competitive benchmarking exercise against Yahoo! (all good companies do this). We've been testing it out with a small group of our users (you), and we've learned which elements work and which don't. The important takeaway, however, is that this design was and is a starting point for us. We are making changes to the experience and introducing new features based on your feedback. And you will see these changes roll out in the coming weeks.
So, will there still be similarities with Yahoo! after the beta test is over? Absolutely! There will also be similarities with MSN. All home pages must deliver a basic set of features and functionality (e-mail, search, news, Weather, navigation) to meet users' needs and expectations, and we all learn from each other in how we best deliver these. As the home page space continues to mature, design standards have and will continue to emerge that we will all adopt: left hand navigation, ad banner sizes, search treatment and placement etc. So standardization of fundamental page elements is not a bad thing (much like you have certain basic expectations of how a Web e-mail or instant messaging application will be laid out).
But having said this, we do spend our days in the office working on ways to truly differentiate the new AOL.com in areas that matter the most to you:
- Making the home page faster: We know you don't like to wait (neither do we).
- Ease of use
- Highlighting the great content you care about
- Useful functionality: We want to make AOL.com a place where you can get things done and not just find things.
- Personalization
- Local functionality like Events, Traffic, Gas Prices and more
We will continue to work on ways we can make the AOL.com home page better in all of these areas, and we look to you for feedback and ideas on how we can do that.

101. Hello:
I really like the way how you guys change the front page.
I always like this wide option that was why I had a yahoo front page but now I change to aol front page just because don't you think that is a waste of screen when you have a limited front page and now feels like I can really use the whole screen and also looks more attractive to the eye.
Thanks

109. Diane,
A lot of users have made similar comments about the new homepage color and treatment. So the team is exploring some new design treatments, including a more familiar and deeper blue color. We hope to release a test of the new treatment in the next few weeks. In fact, we'll probably make the new colors available via the Homepage Blog. So stay tuned!
Best,
Lisa

110. I like the new web based system, it uses less resources.
My biggest wish is that the stored "FAVORITES" could be accessed, so that I would not have to start from scratch rebuilding a Favorites folder.

112. I installed the new aol today. I have tried to get to many news articles and it won't load. I am disappointed in the new aol. Has anyone else had trouble with the links from the main page. Thank goodness my mail button still works.

115. It's cluttered, crowded, visually overdone...sound repetitive?
I want one screen, not something that I have to scroll through. If I wanted Yahoo or MSN, I'd subscribe with them instead!!!

116. Come now...the new page is IDENTICAL to Yahoo. That was one of my complaints when you first rolled it out and I won't be using the wide version for that reason. Call it inspiration or market tests or whatever you want--the fact is, the new page is exactly the same and if I were Yahoo, I'd have something to say about it. (Maybe we'll hear an announcement soon that AOL is being bought by Yahoo or vice versa?)
Anyway, my chief complaint is now the email button. I want to click a button and sign in and get my email. Right now I have to click a button, then click another button, then sign in. Why the added step? It makes no sense and in fact, it's one reason why I no longer use my Yahoo mail address. Weird how that works. Maybe I'll just start looking for a different email service all together.

117. I have Apple IMac desktop- (2006 model). I cannot open any applications up besides email. Example: clicking news article link- i get a new tab attempting to access that info...but nothing happens past that (well the new tab does show the URL link 'name' like : www.whatever/org/13409834la-slk, I made that one up by the way) Tried signing on a second time, same result. UNLIKE other people - I will try to be patient as I know this must be very complicated transition time. Good Luck

118. Two things: 1) once I go to check my email, I cannot get back to the home page without opening an entirely new window each time. Shouldn't I be able to go back and forth between my mail and the main page without having to open and close windows each time? 2) Why do emails drop off after a month? I know on gmail, they stay available indefinitely without having to save them.

119. I miss the "Strange and weird" News link that has been missing since you guys started messing with the site! I really would like that back, I am sure others have realized it has gone missing! I like the news, but to me that was like my "comic" section! I really do miss it and hope someone will out it back there! One of lifes few pleasures "funny stuff"! I read the regular news, but I adored the Weird and Strange news you posted as well. I nice pickme up for the day!
