Hopefully you've had a chance to try out some of the new features that let you personalize your home page. We wanted to let you how we store those preferences, so you can prevent the changes you've made to your home page from being lost. Any time you make changes to your home page, like adding sites to My Links, feeds to the RSS reader or choosing a theme, we store those preferences in a secure "cookie" on your computer. Basically, the cookie allows us to remember the changes you've made and deliver your home page to you the way that you want each time you go to AOL.com. We use cookies on AOL.com so that you are not required to login to the AOL network or even have an AOL screen name to be able to still use and save our personalization features.
We've received feedback from some you that the changes you've made have disappeared or didn't stick, and we understand how frustrating that would be since you invested the time to personalize.
What's happening in these circumstances is that your "cookies" are being deleted. Again, we use cookies to store your individual choices or preferences, so when that cookie is deleted the changes you've made to your home page get cleared away
However, there are ways that you can protect your cookies or private data. Sometimes your browser default settings might not allow cookies or could be set to delete your cookies every time you close it. But you can easily change your browser settings. Here's some information to help you check and update your browser settings.
Internet Explorer
To check your browser settings click click the "Alt" key and "T" keys simultaneously and your "Tools" menu should drop down from the top of your browser window automatically.

Then select "Internet Options" from the menu and then the "Privacy" tab.

If your settings are listed as Medium/High or higher, you may need to manually add AOL.com as a site from which you will allow cookies to save your settings. To add AOL.com, just click on the "Sites" button and then type www.aol.com in the input field then click "Allow". That's it.

If your Privacy settings are Medium or lower, you should not have to worry about losing your choices unless you manually choose to delete
Firefox
To check your browser settings click the "Alt" and "T" keys simultaneously and your "Tools" menu should drop down from the top of your browser window. Select "Options" from the menu and then select the "Privacy tab. ". Make sure that the checkboxes in the Cookies section are checked and that "Keep Until" is set as "until they expire".
Safari
For you Safari users, you can find similar setting by clicking Alt-E and then click on the "Security" tab. Make sure that the Accept Cookies setting is set to Always or Only from sites you navigate to (make sure its not set as Never).

If you are feeling very tech savvy, and you do want to delete cookies, you can go in and save the cookie named "uauserid". I'll spare you the details on how to do this as I have a feeling anyone who wants to venture down this path likely knows their way around pretty well already. If you do need help, please do drop us a comment here and we'll be sure to respond.
We are working on a solution that will let you bind your home page preferences to your AOL or potentially other external accounts, which we hope to release later this year. The benefit of this feature is that you can sign in to any computer at any time and have your home page reflect your preferences.
So, hopefully this information has helped. But if you still have issues or questions, there are some additional FAQs here or feel free to post of comment or send us feedback and we'll be sure to respond.

Thanks to Wayback Machine Archives, we were able to access and transfer valuable data, concerning our cryobiological research inj cold tolerance of Trachycarpus and Rhapidophyllum palms. This saved AOL from an embarrassing lawsuit, since some AOL users were NOT notified of Hometown closure, and our pages of information vanished without notice.
AOL; shame on you. Bad move, and it costs you our business, and your reputation by word of mouth.

Like most everyone else here, I had my web site on AOL Hometown too. Mine was on since May, 1996. I’ve been a paying member since 1995. When AOL went free, I continued to pay. I thought that, since I was receiving a derived benefit from my website being hosted on AOL, it was only fair that I should put something back into the pot. Stupid ME!!!! Well, I did get the AOL email notifying me about the shutdown and I retrieved my files before the power went off. But the search engine positioning & links to the site are gone forever. My new URL is http://www.typewriterdepot.com and is hosted by a more reliable company than AOL. I will start all over again.
My parting comments to the AOL staff that made this decision are, how dumb can you get? Why walk away from this business when you can charge for the service? Or sell it if you don’t want it. Are you in some sort of self-destruct mode? Are you actually getting paid to make these decisions? I am sure that folks would have paid for this valuable service. It’s no surprise to me that AOL is in the pickle it’s in these days. THIS WAS THE DUMBEST DECISION I’VE SEEN MADE IN A LONG TIME. I don’t know who’s steering this ship but it’s sad.
Amen.

I am trying desperately to find out how to store my password. It seems that each time I log on it doesn't recognize the passowrd and goes through an interrogation process to get me to reset it. Each time I answer the questions and reset it, it still says "invalid...etc". After about 6 frustrating attempts with all different passwords, I log out and restart and am able to log in. This is becoming a royal nuisance. Then I read about storing passwords and it suggests going to "MY AOL" and Keyword "Preferences". Well there is no KEYWORD box anywhere on my home page. Going to MYAOL, there is no keyword box either, not anything for preferences. The only "settings" changable on the "email" dropdown is number of messages displayed. HELP! What is going on? I am noticing "beta" on the MYAOL page...is AOL mixing in Beta versions with the regular versions. Thus is so frustrating!

I started out on the Internet with a company called ChoiceUSA.com with a Netscape browser back in 1991. Not much later I moved to AOL because of their features and variety. The main feature that I would tout to others was that it was an all in one package that I could access and change my web pages at will on the same server network and not have to check a hundred email addresses. Oh incidentally my on line resume in this economy (currently unemployed) was linked to my hometown page.
I am a computer administrator so I have copies that albeit will need much modification can be put to another website. But my questions are: As an administrator why would you just quit supporting an application completely with such short notice? I am not a business analyst but it would seem to me that the way to do this was to set up a new sever to fill the gap between transitions with at least a one year notification. That way word of mouth would let those whose emails were not reached know.
my next question as consumer is are you going to have any free web space and will I have CGI access. If so when? Am I paying $15/month for an ISP connection only? NETZERO is only $10/month. Why should I stay?
Lastly I am not a vindictive person and I try to look at things from every perspective before making a judgment or decision on something or someone, so I am giving you this opportunity to justify yourselves to the questions I have raised. Please respond to my email address or answering machine number listed below. I would thank you for twenty years of good service but this type consumer based betrayal does not warrant it now. Also you should know that should this come to a class action lawsuit that I would reluctantly sign it.
Sincerely,

Hello:
If this is new, its it confusing to a "trying out" effort by a new person.
I think I saw some place once where you could access your old dial-up system. Where is this located? mcom.com email has been on "system maintenance" since noon and I still have my other on dial-up so I'd like the answer sent there where I'll be able to access. Its worth the $10 a month to have a stable platform and high speed doesn't impress me much except for being able to watch some video presentations.
Thanks.

I am tired of paying so much money for such service. Please fix the problems. In these times you should be on top of giving the best service for the money!

I also hate what AOL has done with this new homepage. I try to delete pieces of it and I cannot get rid of any of it.
I found my old Favorites accidently. I went to START, then SEARCH, and looked for files and folders and did a search for favorites. It came up with a list of where I had the last 3 or 4 versions (because of all of the AOL screen changes) I went into them and found the newest version and then did a drag and drop from all the others to get all my favorites into this new folder. Hope that helps.

I want to know where my web page that I created for my nephew who was born w/ brain damage went? I had his life story with pictures, guestbook signatures, awards, etc. What happened to my graphics and story of his life? How can I retrieve it all when PP2 went down, I had no way of editing his page, so, it was just on AOL out in cyber space. But, at least his family and I could see his web page that I made. This is NUTS! Don't we have rights while paying for the service?....All I get is screen names, mail, and buddy list for my money! AOL has stooped to a new level without notifying us. You give us something, then at your leisure, take away all our hard work that we put into our web pages~This stinks bad!! Tell me how to get my graphics, pictures, awards, signatures and the rest back!!! E-mail me to let me know!!

Hi, I have been using AOL since 1994, on the Mac (where it started). My question is that I entered AOL (broadband) through the OS X AOL software for a friend who wanted to access as a guest. Worked fine, but now when I access AOL through Safari and AOL.com and sign in, I get her welcome edda rather than welcome aceleslie on the main screen. That screws up modifying the newly changed main screen. When I go to mail, is show the right greeting aceleslie. How do I get the main screen to show the right greeting?

How do I get rid of all the crap under "my stuff"? Of all the stupid boxes of crap on that side of the page, the only one I have ANY interest in is the "my stuff" box, because all I ever do on the home page is go to email, weather, and news. EVERYTHING ELSE NEEDS TO GO. PERMANENTLY. So how is that accomplished?
