At AOL.com, we were shaken by the senseless and tragic events that unfolded last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut. It's our job to curate the news, even the most difficult stories, but at the same time, we grieve along with you for the lives that were lost, both the young and those of the adults who dedicated themselves to nurturing America's youth.
While we are inspired by the heroics of people like Victoria Soto, we wonder what great things she may have gone on to do in the future had she not been forced to sacrifice her life to prevent the senseless killing of children. To that end, we feel strongly that it's incumbent upon us to do something that makes a difference.
We're not a political website and we typically shy away from editorials. But we also know the status quo surrounding gun violence in America is unacceptable.
So we're doing four things today.
First, we're observing the national web moment of silence on AOL.com at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the Sandy Hook victims.
Second, we're joining with 750 mayors and other leaders in the Demand a Plan campaign (http://www.demandaplan.org/) to ban high volume assault weapons and require criminal background checks for firearms. This is a sensible idea and is in line with our commitment to family safety.
Third, we know not all of our members agree on potential changes to gun laws. So if you have different ideas on how to prevent tragedies like the one in Newtown, please let us know in the comments area below and we'll share the best of them on AOL.com. This isn't about ideology -- it is about reducing the number of mass murders, so please share any realistic solution you may have.
And fourth, we're sharing how the nation's elected representatives have voted on gun laws to allow you to see where your representative stands, and we urge you to contact them to express your point of view on how to prevent these tragedies.

Since AOL.com, was Soooo shaken just by the senseless and tragic events that unfolded last Friday, how about Abortion???
I think women, women's groups and AOL should also due some "self reflection" on allowing so many abortions. After all, gun "rights" are covered in the Constitution, Abortion is only a law. Hell, women/Doctors killed 1,200,000 (MILLION) unborn children (some partial births with 95% of the babies body already delivered out of the women body) this year. I mean these unborn aborted kids were only 6 years younger than the ones killed in Conneticut. Let's see 40,000,000 (MILLION) unborn babies killed since the abortion law was passed. Imagine if we had all those MILLIONS of babies/people paying taxes, social security and medicare.(and now Obama health care premiums). Do you think women are abusing their abortion "right" (wink, wink)with those kinds of incredibly large numbers? Let's see, Doctor's make $700-$800. an abortion (all profit), times 40,000,000.MILLION abortions. That's a pretty good recession proof business. Do 3-4 of those a day for a week and pay your country club golf dues for the year. Along with cancer treatments, no chance Doctors are going to want to voluntarily stop the lucrative abortion trade

When will people stop blaming violence on guns. People are the problem not guns. While we are at it, lets only allow plastic knives to be legal to prevent the scores of stabbings each and everday. Those of you who forget the rights and priviledges of this country should leave. It's so much better elsewhere I'm sure.

... and banning large soft drinks inside NYC city limits ... that will keep the great unwashed from getting fatter, I'm sure ... then you should also ban silverware (ok, plastic-ware/sporks, et al, for the fast food set) Better yet ... let’s ban all fast food! Hate to break it to you folks but, it's an imperfect world out there these days ... the once great American populous is now replete with assholes/idiots who are seemingly incapable of discerning fantasy from reality. Banning hi-cap mags and semi-auto assault style weapons is not going to keep any loon, committed to culling the herd, from getting his dick-skinners on a weapon and wreaking havoc. I carry my piece "condition one" just to keep my family members, or myself, from becoming a victim from any deranged ass-clown, the likes of this little dolt, up there in tree hugger central. Had one of those utopian educators perhaps contained the intestinal fortitude to safely carry a weapon ... the death toll possibly could have been minimized. We'll never know ... but if we're going to ban hi-cap mags/assault weapons ... then let's also ban idiotically violent Hollywood movies, violent video games, etc. Furthermore ... we have to have a license to fish, hunt, drive, to carry a weapon ... but it seems anyone can copulate and reproduce without any forethought or planning. Hell, while we're banning stuff ... lets ban sex until you get genetically approved and licensed to reproduce! Do any of you not see where this is headed? Here's to the successful dumbing-down and further pussification of America.

Weighing in on the commie side of this issue just got you dropped as my service provider. At least I know now where you stand. Providing a service (or entertaining) may give anyone the platform to pontificate, but it also gives me the opportunity to see your true colors and vote with my feet. This may have just been a publicity stunt on your part(to attract headlines for business), but I would venture to say you just lost a loyal fan base with your "sensible ideas and family values" tap-dance. Since you don't know the issue (assault weapons have been banned for over fifty years and background checks are already performed), the best thing for you to have done was remain silent. The second amendment was designed (by the designers) to protect the population (from the government, if necessary). No one with a shred of common sense bought into the crocodile tears the other day from the anointed one (small caps intended). Giving the republicans a "poor grade card" because they support our God-given right of self defense further demonstrates how far you have strayed from reality (if you ever had a grip on it in the first place). It's all Hegelian- "The state knows better" nonsense. Giving the republicans a "poor grade card" because they support the constitution shows us everything we need to know about you. This last (preventable) tragedy lays squarely at the feet of the very ones that are running around now pretending "we need to do something." An armed society is a polite society.

the only way to stop this is to arm the teachers. you have never heard of one of these fools shootinng up a police station or a gun store schools are soft targets, also the media should never publicize the name of the shooter let them remain anonymous as this would take away their sick desire to have their moments of fame and of those that dont kill them self and are caught right handed ie tucson/auroa they should be executed within a week or two after they are caught

I have for sometime been concerned about the obvious liberal "spin" AOL promotes through their almost exclusively posting of Huffington Post articles. While we all mourn the loss of the most recent victims at Newtown and the soul of our Nation is diminished with the loss of every innocent life both born and unborn, we must focus on the root causes of our society’s apparent loss of respect for the sanctity of all life. The reality of violent behavior, even in a civilized society, is universal and unavoidable. It is incumbent on us as individuals and as citizens of a free state to protect to the extent reasonably possible our families and those of our fellow citizens from the inevitable acts of random mayhem. However, this will not be accomplished by the systematic eroding our God given rights and those rights granted us by our Constitution.

the government is supposed to be working for us ,a government that is fear full of the citizens is a good government.
agovernment that controls the citizens and has the citizens afraid of it is tyriny, and that is were we are at today.
read the second ammendment,it is there to protect our rights and changeing it means the only ones that will have guns is a tyriny government and criminals ,all in the same.
read what the for fathers have to say about a tyriny government and our rights as gun owners

I detest these senseless murders as much as anyone. Wake up America!! more gun laws and changes to gun laws is NOT going to do a thing to alleviate the problem. Much harsher sentences handed down by our judicial system will do more than anything else. The second thing is appropriate parental training and involvement without interference by governmental agencies. There are a lot of parents who have been charged with child abuse when they are only guilty of disciplining their children. As of right now it is against the law for doctors to disclose information on patients. They need to be relieved of this law when it comes to mental health problems that could lead to these tradegies. Allow this type of information to be available to gun stores so they can refuse the sale of guns to those individuals. I really don't think there is any way to eliminate these occurences and we the law abiding citizens need to be armed to offer what protection we can. If some of those adults had been armed it is very likely that they could have stopped this mentally disturbed person before he had to opportunity to kill all these adults and children.

First, take away the notoriety that the gunmen/women get from doing this. Most committ suicide at the scene or are killed by law enforcement. I don't want to know about them after they committ such a crime. No sick glory for them.
Second, tighten the gun laws (or actually follow them).
Place security guards in all schools and have safe rooms available for children to go to in case a gunman gets into the school.
Train children and teachers how to react to such an incident.
Have a one day tax for the entire nation (50. Dollars for each household - the Newtown Safety tax) to pay for the above - no government intervention - but given to the community school boards to ensure that it is done. Assign parents to ensure that the school boards have used the money appropriately. Do not tax those families that have incomes below the poverty level. As a parent, I would be willing to pay $50. to ensure that my children were safe.
Take away the law that states the gun shops and the NRA are not responsible for how someone who purchases a gun uses it. The threat of litigation always make people sit up and take notice.
Increase funds for mental health care that target care for families and individuals with a caveat that these funds are for those at risk for this behavior.
Finally, make our government representatives responsible for not doing anything about all of the above and fire everyone who does not take a stand against this kind of violence.

Guns are not the problem, the people are the problem. Lame brain politicians make MORE laws that trample law abiding citizens rights. Enforce existing laws, get rid of gun free zones, and look beyond guns as the problem.

Banning guns is not the answer. Guns are out there and always will be. Banning them will only more problems with undergound traffic and theft. The chances of your child getting shot in a school is the same as getting struck by lightning. Politicians always jump on a bandwagon to make themselves look good. They are all snakes who strike at opportunities. Guns, cars, knives nor any other means that may harm people are not the culprits. Society is the problem. The entity to blame is ignorance.

Our Great country is sick. Our leadership is sick.
Instead of a Shinning City on a hill, we've become a moral sesspool. Stop talking about eliminating guns, violent video games and our rights. Our country needs inspiration. With a vision so strong it lives in us. People will gravitate to right behavior if there is living hope in them. {Example} Ever dream of going to the moon. Where is NASA today? Or do you dream of being a 26 year old ex student in debt up your gazoo living in your parents basement. Of course you have health care their paying for. Where is your future headed. I have never seen a gloomy face on any young person who has just been inspired to fulfill a dream. This current administration is full of vultures who are eating your dreams. These are days that these predicable events will continue to escalate as long as we have a negitive style of leadership and vision. Place your hope in a Joe Biden task force????

People need to do their homework. Australia banned guns about 2 years ago, violent crime is way up, and home invasions have risen 48%. That is because the crooks who still have guns know that Joe Citizen doesn't have a gun and can't defend themselves. The people who say arm our teachers, teach them how to use a gun and these senseless killings will stop have a valid argument. An armed citizen is a safe citizen. Also enacting background checks to purchase a gun is a good idea, but we need to take it one step further, everyone in a household should be checked out before a gun can be purchased. And if you have a record of mental illness you CAN'T BUY A GUN.

Amost ever hunting gun came from a military design as most other high tec. inventions we have today came from military inventions.
The so called assault gun used was one that such gun. As with all military men that were taught how to use their weapon in the miltary later would chose a like gun for hunting and target shooting because they knew the gun from miltary experence.
Now the anti-gun people decided to call ever and anything that looked like a true assault weapon in their words AN ASSAULT WEAPON. The style of gun we are talking about has been around for almost 75 years. A REAL assault gun is FULL AUTO and has other military features on them and are not the same gun.
The look of assuslt weapons may be simular but they are not the same. A true AK-47 or My 16 with paperwork today sells for $12.000 to $20.000 and to own one You have to go thur a class three dealer. And by the way, These guns and their owners have no record of being used in a crime. So talking about a semi-auto and a full Auto ARE TWO different things altogether.
We already have OVER 21,000,,,,,,,Yes thats what I said GUN LAWS ON THE NOW and that will never prevent a detarmend killer from killing. It is estimated that there are over ONE BILLION, Yes ONE BILLION AK-47 in the world now and those are Full AUTO true assault guns.
A man that knows guns can take a 1860 Henry Rifle from the Civil war period and fire 15 shots from it almost as fast as He can with the gun to day called a SEMI-AUTO ASSAULT weapon. Semi-auto and full auto weapons have been around since the 1800s and they give no problems till the last few years in the hands of nuts. The high capaticy magazane thinking is that without them one would be limited from firing as many shots,,,,This is pure BS. One can carry a hand full of five shot and fire about as fast.
My Opinion is We Have a Country that is out of control with its people not guns. With over 2,100 gun laws on the books it would seem that is enought. Taking a gun away from a law abiding person because another has abused a gun makes no since to Me. I feel having a gun is a personal choice and if I choose to do so then You can do as You feel Yourself.
Why would one want a semi-auto or large capaticy magazne? For the same reason one may want a car with high horsepower or a Rolex watch. Its called Personal freedom. I use a fast firing gun to kill wild hogs that hare taking over the area around here as I can get several before they scatter and I also like millions of other like target shooting or plinking with my guns. When I was in school years ago, Us boys carried gun to school and we sit them in the corner and on the way home we hunted for a rabbit or other small game for supper,,,We never had any problems from guns.
Taking away the right of One person to make another feel beeter is Pure BS. Here we are today with one killer not in trail for going on two years because he wants to keep his beard and onther sitting in court with red hair. What kind of crap is this? Both should have already been swinging from a tree the next day. People with bad thoughts see this and think they can beath the system.
In closing, People kill People. Pushing more gun laws is not ever going to change this. These resent things could well be God is sending Us a message to look at how We are dealing with our menal ill and how We have let other thing in our lives.

To quote a line from Law & Order:
"Until we cure what ails the human heart it won't make a dent in the body count." It was an episode about gun manufacturers liability for deaths with guns. Unfortunately, the government continues to whittle away our rights and we keep allowing it. Gun responsibility means safety training, trigger locks, gun cabinets, etc. Among the 15 states with the highest homicide rates, 10 have restrictive or very restrictive gun laws - some of the strictest in the country saw increases in the homicide rates after their laws were tightened ie NJ & NY.

Making anything illegal will not work period. School and arm some of our teachers. Hire our jobless vets to protect schools. One entry way with metal detectors and a second set of door's you must be buzzed through. All exits one way and checked every hour to ensure no one has blocked them open. Nothing will be full proof. To pay for all of this add a tax to ammo and gun's. We need real solutions. I could make a clip and turn a simple hand gun into a machine gun. For the record I am not a member of the NRA.

Typical hysteria, The gun is NOT the problem people. The fact that almost every single mental hospital has been closed and there letting the prison system handle them IS a problem.
You want to have a FRANK discussion. Lets start with mental health.
