At AOL.com, we were shaken by the senseless and tragic events that unfolded last Friday in Newtown, Connecticut. It's our job to curate the news, even the most difficult stories, but at the same time, we grieve along with you for the lives that were lost, both the young and those of the adults who dedicated themselves to nurturing America's youth.
While we are inspired by the heroics of people like Victoria Soto, we wonder what great things she may have gone on to do in the future had she not been forced to sacrifice her life to prevent the senseless killing of children. To that end, we feel strongly that it's incumbent upon us to do something that makes a difference.
We're not a political website and we typically shy away from editorials. But we also know the status quo surrounding gun violence in America is unacceptable.
So we're doing four things today.
First, we're observing the national web moment of silence on AOL.com at 9:30 a.m. in honor of the Sandy Hook victims.
Second, we're joining with 750 mayors and other leaders in the Demand a Plan campaign (http://www.demandaplan.org/) to ban high volume assault weapons and require criminal background checks for firearms. This is a sensible idea and is in line with our commitment to family safety.
Third, we know not all of our members agree on potential changes to gun laws. So if you have different ideas on how to prevent tragedies like the one in Newtown, please let us know in the comments area below and we'll share the best of them on AOL.com. This isn't about ideology -- it is about reducing the number of mass murders, so please share any realistic solution you may have.
And fourth, we're sharing how the nation's elected representatives have voted on gun laws to allow you to see where your representative stands, and we urge you to contact them to express your point of view on how to prevent these tragedies.

All of the guns used in the Newtown were purchased legally. We need to strenthen the existing laws and be more dilegent in how backround checks are preformed. However that will not stop thoes who are mentally drfective. I blaim his parents for sweeping his mental problems wnder the carpet. Denile is not a river in Egypt.

We will never eliminate the acts of antisocial personality disorders. However , the question remains of why three big guns were available in his own house. People who hunt for sport are one issue' people who arm themselves with military weapons is completely another.

We should more focus on identifying the people in our society who need mental health help, and stop trying to solve the problem with gun laws, that folks like this lad would not obeyed. Maybe we should regulate sale of violent video games and paintball sports. We need to teach kids that it IS NOT ok to shoot people. I also find it curious that the NRA rating system was inverted in your table of law-maker voting. Seems like you do have an agenda.

We already have enough laws.
1) It's already illegal to shoot someone.
2) In most states, it's already ilegal to carry a firearm onto school property unless you're a law enforcement officer.
3) The guns used in this awful crime were registered.
4) I think it's pretty much common knowledge that criminals do NOT obey laws.
5) FACT: The areas with the most strict gun laws have the highest rates of violent crime per capita.
6) Fact: Gun laws do not work. They only enable criminals to act more freely.

Take away all automatic weapons from law abiding citizens and you will have the same scenario as Hitler created. We need to focus on mental health. Background checks need to be mandatory. But it would not have stopped the man who killed the people in Aurora. He was intelligent enough to booby trap his apartment. If someone is angry enough to kill a meat cleaver will do, a baseball bat or something else.

There has been a ban on automatic ( MACHINE GUN ) weapons for decade. The only place you will find them is in the military and police department. The SS that protects they have those cute little UZi which are automatics.
What happened last Friday was a direct result of this countries mental health rules.
I have own a similar weapon for 20 year and it has not fired on it own in that time.

Gun VIOLENCE, I have a safe full of guns and none of them are Violence, let's talk about human violence. Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and he didn't use a gun! Let's talk about mental health and the government cutting the funds for it. Teachers want a raise let's give a 5 thousand dollar bonus a year to the ones who have a conceal weapon permit and carries a gun to school every day. Why go shoot up a school where there is no one to shoot back. People who want to disarm America are wanting to exterminate us.

'Frank' only epitomizes the ignorance of the left-wing gun-hating DEM liberals with his post! What would you ban next Frank?...SPOONS for causing people to die from over-eating?! And YES AOL Team, you SHOULD have remained politically neutral! You obviously have jumped into the 'Huff Post' lame-stream media fray on 'gun control'! I'll be canceling my 15 year AOL membership and going to a Gmail account!
